Description

Key Characters:

Growth Form: Probably trees.

Stems: New growth sparsely puberulent, soon glabrate.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades narrowly obovate, 9.5–10 cm long, 4.8–5.4 cm wide. Apex obtuse. Base broadly cuneate. Surfaces glabrous; blades, firm-chartaceous. Margins entire. Midrib prominent, venation evident, primary lateral veins slightly curved at distal end, their tips connected by a slightly sinuous vein ca. 1–3 mm from margin, venation pinnate, lateral veins connected by an arched submarginal vein, higher order venation forming a reticulate pattern. Petioles pale, corky–thickened, 10–13 mm long, glabrous. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers ca. 25 in sparsely puberulent, axillary cymes, pedicels 3–7 mm long, bracteoles ovate. Floral details unknown. Calyx of 4 sepals; sepals ca. 1.5 mm long in bud. Corolla of 4 petals. Stamens 8. Ovary superior, 4-celled and 4-lobed, carpels connate, only slightly distinct at apex to almost entirely distinct; ovules 2 per cell, hemitropous, 1 ascending; style 1, terminating in 4 short stigmatic branches.

Fruit: Fruit 20–26 mm wide; of distinct follicles 10–13 mm long; exocarp green or brown; glabrous or minutely appressed puberulent near suture; somewhat rugose veined when dry; endocarp thin; cartilaginous; glabrous. the carpels dehiscing along the upper suture; exocarp. Seeds usually 1 per follicle; ca. 6 mm long. glossy black when ripe; crustaceous; ovoid; sometimes angled from compression; embryo straight in fleshy endosperm; radicle short; cotyledons compressed; ovate; putamen brown; warty.
